Microneedling

Microneedling is one of our most popular procedures for improving overall skin quality. It accesses the second layer of the skin with tiny needles . These needles cause a tiny trauma which then triggers your skin to heal itself creating fresh collagen and elastin fibres. This leaves the skin more even in tone and texture.

How does it work?

Microneedling

Microneedling works by creating controlled micro-injuries or tiny punctures in the skin using fine needles. These injuries stimulate the skin’s natural healing process and promote the production of collagen and elastin, which are key to maintaining a youthful, smooth, and firm complexion.

  • Preparation: The skin is cleaned, and a topical numbing cream is applied to minimize discomfort.
  • Needling: A device with small, fine needles is used to create micro-injuries on the skin’s surface.
  • Healing Response: The body responds by sending blood and nutrients to the area, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin.

We usually suggest to apply a regenerative skin product after microneedling to pass into the channels created by the needles to boost collagen production even further and speed up downtime by amplifiying healing properties.
Examples of these are PRP, Cellular Matrix, Exosomes, Polynucleotides

FAQs

What does microneedling do for my skin?
  • Improves Skin Texture: Helps smooth out rough or uneven skin texture, leaving it softer and more refined. Helps minimize the appearance of large pores, making the skin look smoother and more even.

  • Reduces Fine Lines and Wrinkles: Stimulates collagen production, which helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, particularly around the eyes, mouth, and forehead.

  • Diminishes Acne Scars: Helps break down scar tissue and stimulates skin regeneration, improving the appearance of acne scars over time.

  • Enhances Skin Tone: Reduces hyperpigmentation, sun spots, and uneven skin tone by encouraging skin renewal and improving overall skin appearance.

  • Boosts Collagen and Elastin: Stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, which are essential for maintaining skin structure, firmness, and elasticity.

  • Improves Skin Firmness and Elasticity: With consistent treatments, microneedling can help improve skin laxity, giving a more youthful and lifted appearance.

The ideal candidate for microneedling is typically someone who:

  1. Has Fine Lines or Wrinkles: Those looking to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles can benefit from the collagen-boosting effects of microneedling.

  2. Has Acne Scars: Individuals with mild to moderate acne scars or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can see improvement with microneedling, as it stimulates skin regeneration.

  3. Has Uneven Skin Tone or Texture: Those with uneven skin tone, dullness, or rough texture may find microneedling effective for rejuvenating and smoothing the skin.

  4. Has Enlarged Pores: Microneedling can reduce the appearance of large pores by promoting collagen and elastin production around the pore area.

  5. Wants General Skin Rejuvenation: People seeking a refreshed, youthful appearance or wanting to improve skin elasticity and firmness can be great candidates.

The downtime after microneedling can vary depending on factors like your skin type, the intensity of the treatment, and how well you care for your skin afterward.

1. Immediate Aftermath (First 24–48 Hours):

  • Redness and Inflammation: Immediately after microneedling, your skin will likely appear red and slightly inflamed, similar to a mild sunburn. This is a normal response to the procedure.

    • Duration: The redness typically lasts for 4 to 6 hours after the treatment but can persist for up to 24–48 hours depending on the depth of the treatment and individual skin response.
  • Mild Swelling: You may experience slight swelling, especially around the areas where the microneedles penetrated more deeply. This swelling should go down within 1–2 days.

  • Dryness and Tightness: Your skin may feel dry, tight, or sensitive in the first 24 to 48 hours after the treatment. This is due to the skin’s natural healing process.

2. Post-Treatment (3–7 Days):

  • Peeling or Flaking: Some peeling or flaking of the skin can occur between 2 to 5 days after treatment. This happens as your skin sheds the damaged outer layers to make room for new skin cells.
    • Not Intense Peeling: Unlike chemical peels, the peeling with microneedling is usually mild, so it’s typically not noticeable unless you look closely.
  • Continued Sensitivity: Your skin will still be sensitive during this period, and it may feel warm or irritated, especially if you’ve had a deeper treatment. Avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen during this time to protect your skin.

3. Week 1 (Post-Treatment Recovery):

  • Recovery Complete: By the end of the first week, most of the visible redness, swelling, and peeling should have subsided. Your skin may still feel a little sensitive but will be in the process of regenerating and healing.

  • Initial Improvements: You may begin to notice some early improvements in your skin texture and tone, though the full effects will take a bit longer to show.

  • Immediate After Treatment:You may notice some redness, swelling, or mild irritation, similar to a mild sunburn, which typically lasts a few hours to a couple of days.

  • 1-2 Weeks Post-Treatment: Initial improvements in skin texture and tone may be visible, but the most significant changes take time as the collagen-building process begins.

  • 4-6 Weeks: Visible results from microneedling usually start to appear around 4 to 6 weeks after the treatment. Skin begins to look smoother, firmer, and more radiant as collagen production ramps up.

  • 3-6 Months: The full effects of the treatment, including reduced appearance of fine lines, improved skin elasticity, diminished scars, and a more even skin tone, can take 3 to 6 months to fully develop, as the body continuously produces new collagen.

In general, you may start seeing noticeable improvements within 4-6 weeks, but full results typically require 3-6 months as collagen remodeling continues. For optimal results, multiple sessions are usually recommended, spaced a few weeks apart

Maintenance sessions for microneedling depend on your skin goals, the severity of the condition being treated, and your skin’s response to the initial treatments.

  1. For Skin Rejuvenation (fine lines, texture, tone):

    • Initial Treatment: 3–4 sessions, spaced 4–6 weeks apart.
    • Maintenance: Once every 3–6 months after the initial series to maintain results and keep skin looking youthful.
  2. For Acne Scarring or Deeper Scarring:

    • Initial Treatment: 4–6 sessions, spaced 4–6 weeks apart.
    • Maintenance: Every 6 months or as needed, depending on scar improvement and skin condition.

The results of microneedling can last anywhere from 3 to 12 months, depending on various factors such as the condition being treated, the number of sessions, and your skin care routine. here are some factors that can influence how long resutls from the course of treatments last:

  • Age: Older skin may require more frequent maintenance to continue stimulating collagen and elastin production.
  • Lifestyle: Smoking, sun exposure, and environmental stressors may cause collagen breakdown, requiring more frequent sessions.
  • Skin Care Routine: A consistent skincare routine with products like retinoids or hyaluronic acid can enhance results and potentially extend the time between sessions.

Contraindications for microneedling can include but are not limited to:

  • Active Skin Infections: If you have any open wounds, active skin infections, or cold sores, microneedling should be avoided as it can worsen the condition or cause further irritation.

  • Severe Acne: Cystic or severe acne can be aggravated by microneedling, especially in areas with inflamed or active acne, as the treatment might spread bacteria or irritate the skin.

  • Eczema, Psoriasis, or Dermatitis: Microneedling can worsen conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or dermatitis, especially if the skin is inflamed or broken.

  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: The safety of microneedling during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been well-established, so it’s generally recommended to avoid it during these periods.

  • Blood Clotting Disorders or Blood Thinners: If you have a blood clotting disorder or are on blood-thinning medications, you may be at a higher risk for bruising, bleeding, or poor healing.

  • Active Skin Cancer or Suspicious Skin Lesions: If you have skin cancer or active suspicious lesions, microneedling should not be performed over these areas until fully evaluated by a doctor.

  • Tendency to Keloid Scarring: If you have a history of keloid scars or hypertrophic scarring, microneedling may increase the risk of developing abnormal scarring in treated areas.

  • Rosacea (Active or Severe): Severe or active rosacea may be aggravated by microneedling, as it can increase blood flow to the skin, potentially worsening redness or irritation.

  • Uncontrolled Diabetes: Individuals with uncontrolled diabetes may experience slower healing, making microneedling a riskier treatment.

  • Use of Certain Skin Medications: If you’re using Accutane (Isotretinoin), microneedling should be avoided until you’ve been off the medication for at least 6 months, as it can cause excessive skin sensitivity and poor healing.

  • Severe Skin Sensitivity or Allergy: Those with extreme skin sensitivity or allergies to any topical anesthetics used during the procedure should not undergo microneedling.

  • Recent sun exposure or fake tan
