How does it work?
Dermal fillers work to replace the volume that has been lost during the ageing process.
As we age, the fat in layer 3 moves downwards and can sometimes create a hollow with more ‘hills and valleys’ on the face causing a lot of shadows.
In the upper cheek area, when the cheek fat falls, this hollow can cause someone to look more tired and drawn in the front of the face. When this fat falls to the lower face it creates a jowl, which forms a downward line from the corner of the mouth to the jaw. All of these changes may sometimes need a little filler placed strategically to fill a visible void or to support a newly displaced piece of fat tissue.
Different face shapes and skin types lead to different needs for fillers. Many don’t ever need filler so an individualised approach is very important as part of an overall skin health plan.

FAQs
Ideal candidate
The ideal candidate is someone who has optimised their skin quality with other products and procedures. They may then need a little more support in their 3rd layer with some dermal filler. Common areas where this is needed is in the marionette lines, the middle of the face (either medial or lateral cheeks) and lips.
How is the treatment performed?
We first apply numbing cream to the area being treated. This will be given time to work. The dermal filler is placed using either a small needle or cannula. The procedure is relatively fast. It can be a bit uncomfortable at first but there is local anaesthetic in the product which will also help with any discomfort during the procedure.
Longevity
It is unknown exactly how long filler lasts in the face. It is certainly much longer than previously thought but is estimated to be 6-18 months. However, dermal filler can move location slightly, or the level of skin laxity can worsen, so it doesn’t perform the function it was originally used for. A top up may then be required.
- Area Treated: Filler tends to last longer in areas with less movement (e.g., cheeks) and shorter in areas with frequent movement (e.g., lips, around the eyes).
- Metabolism: People with a faster metabolism may break down the filler more quickly, leading to shorter-lasting results.
- Lifestyle: Sun exposure, smoking, and regular facial expressions can affect the longevity of filler.
Maintenance sessions
This depends on the area treated. Areas of the face like the lips that move more will break down the filler faster. Maintenance sessions are only required when the ‘hollowed area’ is visible again. There is no need to use filler as a way to ‘prevent’ changes in the face.
When can I expect to see results?
Instant Effect: In many cases, you will notice immediate results after the dermal filler procedure. Swelling and bruising may temporarily mask some of the effects, but the filler will instantly add volume and contour to the treated area.
24 to 48 Hours:Initial Improvement: After the swelling subsides, you’ll begin to see a clearer picture of the filler’s effect. Full results might not yet be visible due to minor swelling or bruising.
1 Week to 2 Weeks: Final Results: By this time, most swelling and bruising will have diminished, and you should be able to see the final results. The filler will have settled into the skin, providing smoother, more youthful contours
