Fotona Full Face Resurfacing
Fotona resurfacing with an Erbium fractional laser is a skin rejuvenation treatment that uses laser energy to target the outer layers of the skin. It creates tiny, controlled micro-injuries that stimulate collagen production and help smooth out fine lines, acne scars, and uneven texture.

How does it work?
Fotona resurfacing—specifically with the Erbium:YAG laser—is an ablative treatment that works by precisely removing the outermost layers of damaged skin.
Laser Energy Delivery: The Erbium laser emits a beam of light at a specific wavelength that is highly absorbed by water in the skin. Because skin cells are mostly water, this makes the treatment extremely precise.
Ablation of Skin Layers: The laser gently vaporizes micro-thin layers of skin with controlled heat. This removes old, damaged skin cells on the surface—like fine lines, pigmentation, and rough texture.
Stimulation of Collagen: As the skin heals, the thermal effect of the laser also stimulates new collagen production in the deeper layers, which improves firmness, elasticity, and overall skin quality over time.
Fractional Mode: Fotona is often used in a fractional setting, which means only a fraction of the skin is treated in a grid-like pattern. This leaves surrounding tissue intact and speeds up healing while still delivering strong results.
Healing & Results: After treatment, the skin peels and regenerates over several days. Downtime can range from mild redness and flaking to a few days of visible peeling, depending on how aggressive the settings are. Final results develop gradually as collagen rebuilds, typically over 4–8 weeks.

FAQs
What does Fotona Resurfacing do?
Fotona resurfacing with an Erbium fractional laser is a skin rejuvenation treatment that uses laser energy to target the outer layers of the skin. It creates tiny, controlled micro-injuries that stimulate collagen production and help smooth out fine lines, acne scars, and uneven texture. After the treatment, mild crusting will occur and all heals in approx 7 days with minimal downtime.
Ideal candidate?
The ideal candidate for Fotona fractional resurfacing treatment typically has the following characteristics:
Anyone with fine lines, wrinkles, or early signs of aging
Those with acne scars or uneven skin texture
People dealing with sun damage or pigmentation
People who aren’t contraindicated to the treatment. You would always need a consultation before booking a resurfacing treatment.
When will I see results?
You’ll typically start to see results from Fotona fractional resurfacing within 5 to 7 days, once the initial redness and peeling subside. Skin will look smoother, fresher, and more even fairly quickly.
However, because the treatment also stimulates collagen production deep in the skin, full results develop gradually over 4 to 8 weeks, with continued improvement in texture, tone, and firmness.
For optimal results, some people benefit from a series of treatments spaced a few weeks apart, depending on the skin concern being treated.
Longevity?
Results from Fotona fractional resurfacing can last 12 to 18 months or longer, depending on your skin condition, lifestyle, and how well you care for your skin afterward.
Longevity of any treatment is affected by:
- Sun protection: Using SPF daily helps maintain results
- Skincare routine: Medical-grade or clinic-recommended products can extend benefits
- Lifestyle factors: Smoking, diet, and hydration all play a role
- Age and skin type: Collagen production slows with age, so maintenance may be needed sooner for some
Many patients choose to do a maintenance treatment once a year or possibly a Fotona 5D treatment yearly to keep their skin looking fresh and firm.

Contraindications
There are certain contraindications where Fotona resufacing should be avoided or modified. These include:
1. Active Skin Infections or Inflammation: If you have an active infection (e.g., cold sores, bacterial infections) or inflammation (e.g., eczema, psoriasis), you should avoid Fotona resurfacing until these conditions have cleared.
2. Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: We advise avoiding Fotona resurfacing treatments during pregnancy due to the lack of conclusive safety data. Hormones are also still settling down post-partum and can have an impact on your skin.
3. Tanned or Sunburned Skin: Having a tan, sunburn, or any type of skin discoloration (even from tanning products) can increase the risk of complications, as the skin is more sensitive to heat-based treatments when it’s not in its normal colour.
4. Use of Photosensitising Medications: Certain medications, such as those used for acne (e.g., Accutane) or some antibiotics (e.g., tetracyclines), can make your skin more sensitive to light, increasing the risk of burns or hyperpigmentation. You should avoid Fotona resurfacing if you are taking these types of medications or consult your doctor for specific guidance.
5. History of/active skin Cancer or other Cancer: If you have active skin cancer or a history of it, this has to be disclosed with your practitioner and eligibility for the treatment will be discussed in clinic.
6.Endocrine disorders (uncontrolled Diabetes): Individuals with uncontrolled diabetes may have slower healing responses, which can make them more susceptible to side effects such as burns or scarring from Fotona resurfacing treatments. eligibility for treatment will be discussed in clinic.
7. Autoimmune Disorders or Photosensitivity Disorders: Conditions like lupus or other autoimmune disorders may make your skin more sensitive to light and impaired healing, which can increase the risk of adverse effects from Fotona resurfacing treatments.
8. Recent Chemical Peels or Laser Treatments: If you have recently undergone chemical peels or other laser treatments, your skin may be too sensitive for Fotona resurfacing. It’s advisable to wait a few weeks (as recommended by your provider) before undergoing Fotona resurfacing after such treatments.
9.Heart Disease or Pacemaker: In rare cases, people with heart conditions or a pacemaker may need to avoid Fotona resurfacing treatments, this will be discussed in clinic.
10. Disease stimulated by light: This would include solar urticaria or photosensitive epilepsy. Fotona resurfacing can trigger these conditions. It is our aim to ensure every treatment is carried out safely and adverse reactions are avoided.
11. Connective tissue disorders: People with connective tissue disorders often have skin that is more fragile, thinner, or more prone to injury. The heat generated by Fotona resurfacing could potentially cause burns, irritation, poor healing, or other adverse effects on these sensitive skin types. The heat from the Fotona resurfacing can also trigger the skin’s healing response, leading to further collagen production, which may contribute to the formation or enlargement of keloid scars.
A consultation will be performed prior to any procedures ensuring all treatments are carried out safely.
If you have any concerns regarding your eligibility for a treatment, you can get in touch or come in for a consultation and we can go through the best treatment options for you.
