Post-treatment information
What to expect
- Most treatments results in some flushing or erythema that may last 1 – 24 hours or longer in some treatments for example resurfacing treatments.
- Some treatments may lead to stinging, itching, burning, mild pain, tightness, peeling and scabbing of the superficial layers of the skin. These sensations will gradually diminish over the course of the week post treatment as the skin returns to its normal appearance. However, some patients may react differently. For example, in severe cases the skin may turn very red, blister, swell and later scab and crust. The skin may be uncomfortable and look like a very bad sunburn. The peeling usually last about three to seven days, although it may last longer.
- Post skin peel tightness of the skin may occur for the first 24 – 48 hours.
- After some of the laser treatments your skin may begin to flake and peel for a few days. Your practitioner will advise you if this is likely to occur with your particular treatment.
- If swelling occurs post treatment, use ice water compresses for 24 – 48 hours intermittently as needed and let the clinic know so that we can further advise you if necessary
- There is a risk (although small) of developing a temporary or permanent pigment (colour) change in the skin with laser treatments and skin peels.
- There is a small incidence of the reactivation of “cold sores” (herpes infections) in patients with a prior history of herpes, so please inform your practitioner if you have had a previous infection.
- There is a rare incidence of scarring and infection post treatment. Please inform us of any concerns so that we can advise you.
POST –TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS
- You will need to be careful with sun exposure for 48 hours post treatment. Your practitioner will advise you on this
- Do not pick, peel, scrape or scratch the treated skin – this will cause scarring.
- Rinse the treated area with water and pat dry for 1st day after treatment. Do not scrub. Use cool or tepid water. Use aftercare products and instructions provided.
- For 3 – 5 days after treatment, ideally avoid shaving, waxing, tweezing or depilatory creams on the treated area.
- There are no restrictions on bathing except to treat the skin gently, for the first 24 hours.
- Make-up may be applied 24 hours or sooner after treatment as long as there is no inflammation, irritation or severe redness of the treated area. This does depend on which treatment you are undergoing.
- Do not exercise a few hours after treatments, since perspiration may aggravate the treated area.
- It is important to wear SPF50+ sun block on a daily basis for at least 2 weeks following treatment.
- In order to achieve maximum benefit from your treatment, it is best done as series of treatments while in conjunction using the products recommended by your practitioner

- Keep the area cool with a cold compress, but don’t apply ice which can cause injury
- Try to avoid unnecessary pressure over any areas treated, especially in the first 24 hours
- Gentle massage, as directed by your practitioner, is recommended for optimal distribution and to help prevent lumps. Swelling and bruising are common and should subside within a week.
Reduce the chance of infection:
- Do not apply make-up for approximately 6 hours unless it is mineral based.
- Wash your hands immediately post procedure
- Do not touch your face in the areas injected for 6 hours
- Use clean facecloth and pillowcase post procedure.
