Patient Information

  • Please stop all retinol usage 7-10 days before your appointment for Microneedling

Don't take any Aspirin/ Brufen/ anti-inflammatories for 24hrs before the procedure as these can increase your risk of bruising

WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR APPOINTMENT:

    - Firstly we will apply a topical numbing cream to ensure you are comfortable for your treatment. Please let us know if you have an allergy to any ingredients in local anaesthetic creams.

    - The procedure takes roughly 1hr

    - After the procedure you will be red and swollen and you may have little lumps on your skin like bee stings.

If we have targeted the eye area it is very common to have small bruises around this delicate area after the procedure

    - The redness and swelling usually goes within 24hrs but the bruising can last up to a week. You can use mineral concealer/spf to cover these bruises.

    - It is good to have arnica gel at home post procedure to help heal the bruising.

    - After the procedure your skin will feel dry and tight for a few days. You shouldn't use active ingredients like exfoliants, vitamin C or retinol for a week after the procedure or until your skin feels healed.

-You should wear SPF daily post procedure.

These responses are normal and resolve quickly and spontaneously over the next 2 to 4 days. Use only a gentle cleanser, mineral spf, and the provided SkinFuse Calming Complex for the next 3 days. You can apply light water-based or mineral makeup where necessary. Drink plenty of cold water for 48 hours after the procedure.

  • Please stop all retinol usage 7-10 days before your appointment for PRP + Microneedling

    - A small vial of blood is taken. A centrifuge machine is used to separate your red blood cells from your platelets/stem cells/growth factors (this is called PRP)

    - As PRP is extracted from your own blood there is no risk of an allergy.

    - The procedure takes roughly 1hr

    - After the procedure you will be red and swollen and you may have little lumps on your skin like bee stings.

    - If we have targeted the eye area it is very common to have small bruises around this delicate area after the procedure

  • After treatment it is expected that there will be some swelling. The final result will not be evident until around 6-8 weeks after the procedure, once the course of treatment is finished. You may be invited to attend a review appointment at any point 4 weeks where the success of the treatment may be assessed and adjustments to your personal treatment plan made, if necessary. PRP is often given as a course of treatments.

Small red spots on the skin usually disappear in a few hours. Transient stinging of the skin is normal after injection (10-15 minutes). If bruising is going to occur, it is usually apparent by day 2-3 and will typically resolve over 10 days.

It is normal to have a degree of swelling and bruising after your treatment, especially around the eye region which can appear very puffy. This usually takes around 5 days to resolve, however it can take longer than this and it is possible to have residual swelling for up to 2 weeks.

Drink plenty of fluids but avoid hot drinks

Remain upright either sitting or standing for as long as possible and you may wish to sleep with 3 pillows at night for at least 3 nights. This is especially important when the lips or eye region have been treated. Do not sleep with pressure on the face

You may require further treatment to obtain the desired results. You may be offered a follow up appointment for 4 weeks after your initial procedure

Please do not wear your normal make up for 12 hours with the exception of tinted mineral spf.

Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen or other anti inflammatory medication for 24 hours after treatment as this may increase bruising. You may take paracetamol or codeine if you are uncomfortable

Do not do consume alcohol for 24 hours after receiving treatment

No strenuous exercise for at least 24 hrs but light exercise such as walking is fine

Do not have a sauna, hot tub or go in a tanning booth for 24 hours after treatment. Always wear a broad spectrum, high factor sun protection (SPF 30-50) on the face, neck, décolletage and hands

    Swelling and Bruising Advice:

    • A degree of swelling and sometimes bruising is normal after your procedure.

    • Swelling can be helped by:

    • Sleeping with 3 pillows at night

    • Using ice or cold compresses every hour

    Bruising can be helped by:

    • Not exercising 7 days after your procedure

    • Not taking aspirin 4 days or ibuprofen 24 hours before your treatment if safe to do so

    • Using arnica cream/gel or tablets

If you have any questions please contact info@kins.ie

  • After your treatment the areas will be slightly red with possible swelling. This will typically dissipate within 24 hours. You will notice that your pigmentation has darkened, this is normal and is a good sign that the treatment is working. The strength of the light can cause small vessels below to the skin to burst resulting in a small bruise, this will subside between 7-10 days and can be covered by concealer.

Avoid sun exposure for 2 weeks after the treatment

No fake tan on the area for 48 hours

Avoid hot baths, showers, steam rooms and saunas for 24 hours.

Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours.

Avoid active skincare such as retinol for 1 week

Use only gentle cleansers, no exfoliating products for 2-3 days and apply mineral spf. Water based or mineral makeup is fine.

    • You should not have Botox if the following applies to you:

    • You are pregnant or nursing.

    • Allergic to albumin

    • Have an active infection or active skin condition

    • Have muscle weakness at the site of the injection

    • Have a history of certain neurological conditions (please discuss with your doctor)

    • If you are on blood thinning medication

    • If you are prone to keloid scars

    • If you have had a Botox treatment elsewhere, please bring details of dates and products that where used.

  • What's normal after a procedure?

    • Injections can cause small amounts of swelling, a temporary bump, redness, bruising, a mild to moderate headache, and sensations such as tingling or mild itching after the treatments. These effects are so common they can be considered a normal part of the process.

    • The initial effects will show in the first 2-5 days. Peak effect on the muscle is at 14 days, but the result will continue to improve for 4 weeks or more. The benefits start to wear off after 3-4 months on average.

How to protect your result & reduce side effects

    - Remain upright for 2 hours

    - Do small extra contractions of the muscles treated every 20 minutes for the first hour.

    - When cleansing, avoid pressure and use gentle strokes away from the eyes.

    - Avoid facial massages or electrical stimulation of the face for the next two weeks

    - Avoid wearing tight caps or garments in the area that has been injected

    - Avoid alcohol and exposure to UV and extreme heat i.e sauna, steam, sun beds, very hot showers, strenuous exercise etc

    Reduce the chance of infection:

    - Do not apply make-up for approximately 6 hours unless it is mineral based

    - Wash your hands immediately post procedure

    - Do not touch your face in the areas injected for 6 hours

    Contact us...

    - If you develop a side effect, such as a dry eye, droopy eyelid, heavy brow

    - Any other side effects you think are important

    - If you feel distressed or worried in any way.

    - Routine adjustments can be carried out from day 14 after your procedure

  • When receiving treatment around the mouth and lips, please mention to your Dr if you suffer from cold sores, as the needle points may stimulate a breakout.

Please don't consume alcohol for 24 hours before and after the procedure

If you are taking aspirin, nurofen, fish oils, high doses of vitamin-C or any other products that thins the blood, the risk of bruising may be higher. We advise you discuss any concerns you may have with Dr Louise prior to your treatment.

  • What's normal after a procedure?

    • Due to the anaesthetic in the gel, you may feel numbness or tingling immediately after the procedure, and have some moderate swelling redness, bruising and tenderness over areas treated. Some people experience a dull ache, and tenderness over the treated areas which subsides between 48-72 hours. Mild, non painful swelling can last for up to 2 weeks. Bruising is usually visible initially, then more obvious the next day before fading over 7 to 14 days. A small minority of bruises can last for 4-6 weeks.

How to protect your result & reduce side effects:

    - For 48 hours you should avoid exposure to UV light and heat i.e sauna, steam, sun beds, hot showers, strenuous exercise, as they may increase discomfort & swelling.

    - Keep the area cool with a cold compress, but don't apply ice which can cause injury

    - Try to avoid unnecessary pressure over any areas treated, especially in the first 24 hours

    - Avoid facial massages or skin resurfacing until the area has healed fully.

    Reduce the chance of infection:

    • Reduce the risk of infection and reaction by not touching the area for 6 hours.

    • Do not apply make-up over injection points until the day after the procedure.

    When to contact us..

    • Serious complications are rare, but it's vital you seek urgent review if anything like this occurs:

    • Swelling, puffiness or lumpiness which does not fade in the first week with a gentle massage.

    • The filler changes texture and becomes hard, nodular or lumpy, especially if there is a redness or tenderness after 48 hours. All these symptoms may indicate a need for medical assistance from your clinician or family doctor if you are unable to see us, contact us so we can advise.

IMPORTANT: Contact us immediately if you have symptoms of a blocked blood vessel.

If you develop increasing pain near or above the site of injection which is getting worse over time, especially if associated with a pale area of skin indicating a lack of blood flow you should contact us straight away. In rare cases, an urgent reversal or other medical interventions may be required immediately to prevent scarring. If we are unreachable attendance at accident and emergency is advised. Make contact with us as soon as possible so we can advise other clinicians to help them.

  • ZO RETINOL INFO

Retinol is the gold standard of creating and maintaining healthy skin. It gives objective results where you will notice a difference and those around you will notice a difference in your skin. It helps with the 6 fundamental pillars of healthy appearing skin-

That skin is 1) Smooth 2) Firm/tight 3) Even in colour 4) Hydrated 5) has a good strong barrier 6) is free from disease (like acne or rosacea)

The results are significantly better and more reliable than any other skincare product on the market.

High dose Retinol will give amazing results- however it does take a period of time for your skin to adjust to it. I will go through the FAQ of ZO retinol usage below:

    WHO SHOULD USE ZO RETINOL?

Anyone over the age of 25-30 looking to decrease signs of ageing and promote healthier stronger skin.

It treats lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, spots, congestion like blackheads and whiteheads. It improves skin texture like scarring and large pores. It stimulates production of collagen and elastin leading to tighter skin.

People with acne and some people with Rosacea.

WHO SHOULD NOT USE ZO RETINOL?

    If you are pregnant .

(It is possible to use while breastfeeding but often it is better to start it when you are not exhausted from babies.)

If you are someone who is not ok with any irritation or downtime when first starting it.

If you have very dry skin with a broken barrier like with eczema on your face – the added dryness and irritation may not be desirable.

If you have an active cold sore.

HOW DO I START A ZO RETINOL?

If you are new to ZO skincare and you have just started some of the other products then I would recommend you get used to them first and make sure your skin feels strong and not sensitive before starting a retinol.

When you begin retinol you use it at the end of your night time routine – unless you are dry/irritated from a previous dose of retinol where by you can use a hydrating cream after the retinol has dried in.

The retinol should be used regularly to really see results. It takes 2-6 weeks for transformation to begin and 5 months of practically daily use for MAXIMUM results- but daily use is not possible for

many people. Initial skin reactions are signs of good repair and will eventually ease as your skin acclimatises.

The reaction to retinol begins 2-3 days after the application so when you first start retinol you should always wait at least 3 days before a second application to see how your skin reacts. The reaction then has a cumulative affect if you use it multiple days in a row. So be aware that if you use it for 3 days in a row you may have no reaction for 2 days but then will have a reaction for 3 doses worth on day 3- this is not dangerous but will cause more irritation.

    WHAT REACTIONS SHOULD I EXPECT?

Normal skin reactions include- redness, dryness, peeling, irritation, itching, burning, sensitivity

You may experience none or all of these reactions- everyone is different

You may have less of a reaction if you have used some sort of retinol before.

    HOW TO REDUCE THE REACTIONS?

Use less product – even half a pump to begin

Use less frequently per week- start only twice per week with at least a 3 day gap in between so you can see how your skin reacts to it. Only gradually increase to more frequently if you can tolerate the 2 days.

Apply the hydrating and calming cream up to 5 times daily to ease any irritation ( you do not need to use this on autopilot if your skin feels fine, only if you need it for dryness or irritation)

Stop polish and Complexion/ oil pads anytime your face feels sensitive from retinol as they will add to irritation

When you need a break from retinol entirely – stop it , stop the pads and polish and use daily power defence twice daily for 4-7 days and you should see the results of retinol with none of the irritation. Also use hydrating cream regularly through out the day.

WHAT DO I DO IF I HAVE AN EVENT AND DON’T WANT ANY SIGNS OF IRRITAION?

Stop retinol 7-10 days before any event and use daily power defence 2pumps twice daily and all reaction will go

    HOW SHOULD I APPLY RETINOL?

When first starting retinol avoid : EYE AREA, NOSTRIL CRACKS OF NOSE, MOUTH AND NECK

These areas are the most sensitive and will take longer to acclimatise to retinol

Start on the outer parts of the face – forehead and cheeks for your first few applications.

It is unlikely that your neck will ever be able to tolerate the same dosage and frequency as your face but you should attempt to use it even once per week if you can. The neck will appear more aged in comparison to your face when the retinol results start to show.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A NORMAL MOISTURISER AND THE HYDRATING CREAM ?

The issue with normal moisturisers is they can dilute the strength of the retinol. This means that you are easing the irritation only because it is lowering the strength of the retinol. The ZO hydrating cream does not affect the strength of the retinol but it does heal and relieve the irritation on the surface of the skin associated with the acclimatisation period of retinol.

I’M OK WITH SIGNIFICANT DOWNTIME AND IRRITAION AS I WANT RESULTS AS FAST AS POSSIBLE- SHOULD I USE THE RETINOL ANY DIFFERENTLY?

Yes . If you are ok with significant irritation then I would recommend starting the retinol twice weekly for the first 1-2 wks then increasing daily usage very quickly to 5-7 times per week for 2-4 weeks as tolerated. This will give significant irritation but will last a shorter period of time and then if you need to bring down the daily usage you will have very little irritation after doing such an intense regime to begin. You can use the hydrating cream 5 times a day and decrease your pads usage to ease any irritation.

ARE THE REACTIONS BAD FOR MY SKIN?

Definitely not. These reactions are signs of good repair – even if they are uncomfortable. Retinol is like a superfood for your skin cells.

You can even bring the retinol right up to the eye area and it is still safe- it will be irritating but it is safe and worth while doing if you have signs of ageing round the eyes. Even if it gets into the eye it is still safe- however this will sting.

HOW LONG WILL THESE REACTIONS LAST?

That is different for everyone. The reactions will last for a shorter period of time if you up the frequency of use per week quicker – but the reactions will also be worse.

On average the reactions last 4 wks and start to ease off consistently after that but it is different for everyone.

I HAVE BEEN ON RETINOL FOR MONTHS NOW AND I AM STILL EXPERIENCING SIDE EFFECTS IS THIS NORMAL?

Unfortunately this can happen for some people , once you have done one good cycle of cell stimulation and repair- roughly 4-6 weeks, then I would recommend finding the right maintenance programme for you and your skin. This may never go above 1 day a week but you will see results – especially if you have done 4-6 weeks of more regular usage even if it did lead to irritation.

I HAVE HAD VERY LITTLE REACTIONS FROM RETINOL AND I AM USING IT EVERY DAY – IS THIS NORMAL?

Its not very common but it absolutely happens. Some people are lucky to have very little reaction from retinol. The side effects from retinol have no bearing on the results seen so don’t worry.

DO I USE MY OTHER ZO PRODUCTS AS NORMAL WHILE STARTING RETINOL?

Yes you can use your normal routine as much as you can tolerate it. You may use the pads less frequently if they cause too much stinging . You can use as many treatment products as you like pre retinol as long as they have been given adequate time to dry in. Some find they increase the use of the polish to daily every morning to remove any flaking skin.

CAN I USE RETINOL IN THE SUMMER MONTHS?

Yes, but only if you use suncream every morning with regular top ups, wear a hat regularly and avoid being out in direct sunlight. If this is unrealistic for you then you should stop retinol for the summer months.

If there is any debate of pigmentation being created then you can stop retinol for the summer months and use a pigmentation preventer product like brightalive.

IS IT EVER OK TO USE RETINOL IN THE MORNING?

The only retinol that can sometimes be used in the morning is the retinol skin brightener if you are also using the wrinkle and texture repair retinol in the evening time- this is a very intense regime for pigmentation treatment.

ANY OTHER PRODUCTS THAT I SHOULD USE WHEN STARTING RETINOL?

I would highly recommend starting the hydration cream with the retinol so that you can tolerate a higher dose and frequency faster with less irritation.

A very high quality suncream is ESSENTIAL when using a retinol .

WHEN SHOULD I EXPECT TO SEE RESULTS?

Make sure to have good quality photos of your skin before you start retinol because as the changes are gradual sometimes you can only really appreciate the dramatic changes by looking at before and after photos.

You may see changes and improvements in overall complexion after 6 -12 weeks but the real laying down of new stronger collagen takes at least 6-12 months of regular usage – and this is the real aim.

Skin changes for acne patients also can take 4-6 months

I have acclimatised to retinol, my skin looks amazing – what’s next ??

You can adjust the dose and frequency of retinol all the time. You can increase to daily , use anywhere from 1-2 or even 4 pumps in any one use. You can alternate between the different ZO retinols which target different cell layers and different skin issues. You can go for an in clinic retinol peel once your skin is used to high dose retinol.

*PLEASE NOTE YOU SHOULD STOP RETINOL TWO WEEKS BEFORE ANY AESTHETIC PROCEDURE AND NOT RESTART IT FOR TWO WEEKS AFTER.

*Retinol will make your skin more sensitive from the sun to burning and pigmentation if you’re going to be exposed to direct sunlight for extended period f times you should stop your retinol

  • Morpheus 8 Aftercare

During the first 24 to 48 hours after treatment you will experience redness and tenderness in the treated areas. There may be swelling and superficial bruising, possibly around the eye area, this will subside within 7-10 days. Crusting and peeling for 3-7 days after the procedure is common.

Do not touch the areas treated for 2-3 days due to risk of infection. Wash hands before cleansing the area and use clean towels, face cloths and pillow cases during this time.
