FAQs

What does Fotona smootheye do?
  • The energy from the laser stimulates the production of new collagen in the dermis as well as tightening existing collagen. This treatment uses Fotona’s patented Smoothmode ™ which enables high enough energy to be delivered  safely to the skin to give amazing results without down-time.

The ideal candidate for Fotona smootheye treatment typically has the following characteristics:

  • Mild to moderate wrinkles or fine lines around the eyes

  • Sagging or loose skin on eyelids or under-eyes (e.g. hooded lids)

  • Early signs of aging or volume loss in the eye area

  • Wants a non-invasive, needle-free eye rejuvenation option

  • In good general health, with no active skin infections or contraindications to treatment.

Some clients have a noticeable improvement either immediately or after a week due to the tightening of existing collagen.

The second phase of improvement is between 4-8 weeks as it takes that length of time for your new collagen to be produced, this is the more significant result. Improvements will build with additional treatments and even after the treatment series is completed you will continue to see ongoing improvements for up to 9-10 months due to collagen and elastin regeneration.

The results of Fotona smootheye can last anywhere from 10 months to 1 year, however, this can vary depending on the individual and the specific skin concerns being treated.

Skin Type and Condition: Individuals with more laxity or crepey skin in the area may need more treatments initially and results can last 10-18 months with maintanence treatments. This will vary depending on the individual.

Treatment Area: Areas that are exposed to the sun more frequently (like the face) may require more upkeep. Sun protection is crucial after an Smootheye treatment, as sun exposure can cause the treated areas to age faster.

Lifestyle Factors: Smoking, poor diet, and high levels of stress can negatively impact the longevity of Fotona results. Healthy habits like staying hydrated, using sunscreen, and avoiding excessive sun exposure will help prolong results.

Frequency of Treatments: Typically, multiple sessions are recommended for optimal results. Usually a series of 3-4 treatments spaced about 4 – 6 weeks apart is common. After the initial course, a touch-up session every 6 to 12 months can help maintain results.

Usually, 3 Smooth eye sessions are recommended, spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart.

After completing the initial series of treatments, you may move to maintenance sessions. These are typically recommended every 12 months, depending on your skin type, concerns, and how your skin responds to the treatments. some people may need more frequent maintenance.

There are certain contraindications where Fotona smootheye should be avoided or modified. These include:

1. Active Skin Infections or Inflammation: If you have an active infection (e.g., cold sores, bacterial infections) or inflammation (e.g., eczema, psoriasis), you should avoid Fotona smootheye as it may worsen these conditions.

2. Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: We advise avoiding Fotona smootheye treatments during pregnancy due to the lack of conclusive safety data. Hormones are also still settling down post-partum and can have an impact on your skin.

3. Tanned or Sunburned Skin: Having a tan, sunburn, or any type of skin discoloration (even from tanning products) can increase the risk of complications, as the skin is more sensitive to laser treatments when it’s not in its normal colour.

4. Use of Photosensitising Medications: Certain medications, such as those used for acne (e.g., Accutane) or some antibiotics (e.g., tetracyclines), can make your skin more sensitive to light, increasing the risk of burns or hyperpigmentation. You should avoid Fotona smootheye if you are taking these types of medications or consult your doctor for specific guidance.

5. History of/active skin Cancer or other Cancer: If you have active skin cancer or a history of it, particularly in the areas being treated, eligibility for Fotona smootheye treatment needs to be discussed in clinic.

6.Endocrine disorders (uncontrolled Diabetes): Individuals with uncontrolled diabetes may have slower healing responses, which can make them more susceptible to side effects such as burns or scarring from Fotona smootheye treatments.

7. Autoimmune Disorders or Photosensitivity Disorders: Conditions like lupus or other autoimmune disorders may make your skin more sensitive to laser treatments, which can increase the risk of adverse effects from Fotona smootheye treatments.

8. Recent Chemical Peels or Laser Treatments: If you have recently undergone chemical peels or other laser treatments, your skin may be too sensitive for Fotona smootheye. It’s advisable to wait a few weeks (as recommended by your provider) before undergoing Fotona smootheye after such treatments.

9.Heart Disease or Pacemaker: In rare cases, people with heart conditions or a pacemaker may need to avoid Fotona smootheye treatments This can be discussed in clinic.

10. Disease stimulated by light: this would include solar urticaria or photosensitive epilepsy. Fotona smootheye can trigger these conditions. It is our aim to ensure every treatment is carried out safely and adverse reactions are avoided.

11. Connective tissue disorders: People with connective tissue disorders often have skin that is more fragile, thinner, or more prone to injury. The heat generated by Fotona smootheye could potentially cause burns, irritation, poor healing, or other adverse effects on these sensitive skin types. The heat from the Fotona smootheye can also trigger the skin’s healing response, leading to further collagen production, which may contribute to the formation or enlargement of keloid scars.

A consultation will be performed prior to any procedures ensuring all treatments are carried out safely.

If you have any concerns regarding your eligibility for a treatment, you can get in touch or come in for a consultation and we can go through the best treatment options for you.
